(7/15): The official band lineup has been finalized. Scheduled to perform are Melvin Seals & JGB, Poor Man’s Whiskey, Front Street & Friends, and

The Fall Risk.

An all-day music festival held annually at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park, Jerry Day has been scheduled for Sunday, August 7, 2011. Doors open at 11:00 AM, with the opening act commencing at noon.

Jerry Day is, in the words of former mayor Gavin Newsom, “a civic and cultural event that celebrates one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time and San Francisco native son – Jerry Garcia. This event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia as we celebrate his legacy, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and recognize his Excelsior roots. By uniting the diverse communities of San Francisco through Jerry’s music, we are creating something extraordinary for Jerry’s childhood neighborhood – the Excelsior District, McLaren Park, and the City and County of San Francisco.”

Established in 2002 by local community residents, the 9th Annual Jerry Day is presented by the Excelsior Cultural Group and San Francisco Parks Trust.

The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater is located at 45 John F. Shelley Drive, inside McLaren Park. Parking is available. The Park is also serviced by the 29-Sunset Muni line.

Portola Neighbors Help McLaren Park

Friday, May 29th, 2009

McLaren Park is San Francisco’s 2nd largest park after the crown jewel, Golden Gate.  But what a stark contrast—whereas Golden Gate Park boasts world-class attractions, McLaren is not widely known—nestled in the southeastern corner of the city, between the Portola and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods, it is more of a diamond in the rough.  McLaren does have an extensive natural area, walking trails, tennis courts, a reservoir and a lake, picnic areas, the nine-hole Glen Eagles golf course, and the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater used for live performances, but the sad fact is that most of the aging facilities desperately need upgrades (read more about the park facilities here.)

Perhaps the most surprising and lamentable features of the park are ones that no longer exist—there are five barren sandpits where original playgrounds used to stand.  The dilapidated play structures were all removed over the years by RPD, when funding was not available to replace them.  The reality is that the park has fallen victim to repeated budget cuts, as it is located in a neighborhood largely comprised of working families, where park advocacy is often a low priority for the busy residents.

Now a new group of “squeaky-wheel” neighbors has organized to raise money and advocate for improvements in the 318-acre park.  Chuck Farrugia is a lifelong resident of the area, who played in the park as a boy and now visits daily with his young son.  He founded Help McLaren Park, along with his wife, Trilce, and neighbor Sue Zimmer after being disappointed to learn that McLaren would not be included in the list of renovation projects funded by the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond.

But the group is maintaining a positive and proactive strategy: by engaging and organizing local families, and by cooperating with the existing park stewardship group, Friends of McLaren Park, they hope to finally gain the necessary power and influence to get their agenda heard by the City.  Read about their two-phase goal on their informative new website here.

Recent activities:
Help McLaren Park has already made contact with Mayor Newsom’s office, and the Supervisors of Districts 9, 10, and 11, all of which surround the park.  Just last month the group participated in the meeting with District 11 Supervisor John Avalos (see the June 2009 Park Success Story), and also held a family-friendly fundraiser in the form of a chili cookoff.  In April, Help McLaren Park also participated in a workday hosted by One Brick and RPD, to remove invasives and plant native plants in the Yosemite Marsh area.  RPD installed new picnic tables near the marsh as well.
