On January 19th, former NPC board member and park advocate Mark Buell was appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom to the Recreation and Park Commission. A native San Franciscan, Mark graduated from the University of San Francisco, and was the city’s first Director of Economic Development under Mayor Joseph Alioto.
Mr. Buell’s civic engagement continued as he served on the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission under Dianne Feinstein. His park advocacy got its start working on the Proposition C campaign, which helped establish park grades and maintenance standards. Mark then served on NPC’s board starting in 1999 until 2003. His most recent role in the park world had been as Chair of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, a nonprofit partner of the GGNRA.
In his new role as Recreation and Park Commissioner, Mark will bring a strong background in philanthropy and partnerships that will help the Department identify new sources of revenue. His background in the public sector, along with his experience working with private philanthropists, make him well-suited for his new post.
