Playfields Stewardship Initiative

Groundbreaking commences at Mission Playground

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

On May 11, District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener joined Susan Hirsch of the City Fields Foundation, DPW director Ed Reisken, RPD General Manager Phil Ginsburg and kids from 826 Valencia in celebrating the start of a $7.5 million renovation at Mission Playground,  which will include remodeling the old and worn-down clubhouse for seismic safety and increased natural light, resurfacing the busy tennis and basketball courts, replanting a lawn, installing new children’s play equipment, improving park accessibility and safety, and replacing the old, asphalt soccer field with a state-of-the-art synthetic turf field.

“The importance of parks and open space cannot be underscored in densely populated neighborhoods like the Mission,” said Supervisor Wiener.  “Today is an important step forward as we continue to try to provide the world-class park amenities our residents need and desire.”

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2012.

The Southeast corner of San Francisco, home to some of the friendliest people in the city, is also home to some of the city’s most pressing health and wellness issues.  Thankfully, there is a growing number of civic-minded neighbors and non-profit organizations who are trying to change that.

In response to the need for neighbors to get active and get outside, the Friends of Silver Terrace, a new park and community group, is hosting its first Wellness Day on Saturday, June 4th Wellness Day at Silver Terrace Park.

Working with the Neighborhood Parks Council, Parks 94124 and Portola Family Connections, the event aims to address wellness issues facing this part of the city through sport and exercise, food and nutrition, and health and safety.  It will present neighbors with a variety of ways to get healthy, including: basketball, volleyball, badminton, and soccer clinics, yoga, tai chi, and walking.

Bubbles and Fun at Silver Terrace Park

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

On Saturday, June 12th, over 40 park lovers gathered at Silver Terrace Park to celebrate the summer with a fun community event. Simply called “Bubble Day”, this event brought out families, and especially children, who all enjoyed warm weather, free food and of course bubbles.

Some came prepared with their own bubble-making apparatuses, while others took advantage of the free bubble-makers at the event. The wind helped carry the bubbles far beyond the park, which made the entire neighborhood feel festive and fun! Later on in the day, volunteer Ruth Wallace (of the Portola Garden Tour group) led a story reading, which enraptured the young children attendees. A favorite story was about a family of ducks, who being chased by a disguised fox, were able to outwit their predator and escape safely. The day ended with all the attendees pitching in to help clean up, leaving the park in pristine condition. If you would like to join the efforts to keep Silver Terrace safe, fun and clean, please email us at outreach@sfnpc.org.

South Sunset Movie Night Brings Back Charm of Community Drive-ins

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Flyer ImageMiss the days when your whole family would pile into the car and roll into your community drive-in theater, eager for salty popcorn and big laughs? Well, the Playfields Stewardship Initiative is bringing back the family movie night charm on June 25, 2010 at the South Sunset Playground Clubhouse by hosting a free movie showing.

“South Sunset Playground is an amazing park that offers so much to the surrounding community. Together with local park users, the Playfields Stewardship Initiative has been planning fun social events around the park for the past two years. I hope this free movie night will get neighbors even more excited about using their park and holding ongoing volunteer workdays and events here,” said Initiative Coordinator Matt Silva.

The Playfields Stewardship Initiative is a partnership between the Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC), City Fields Foundation (CFF), and the Recreation and Parks Department (RPD) that aims to ensure community enjoyment of newly-installed synthetic turf fields, and to maximize the life expectancy of these fields. This is accomplished by organizing sustainable park stewardship groups, which host park cleanups, meetings about playfield concerns, and community-building events.

Mission Youth to Score Free Soccer Day at Garfield Square Park

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Flyer Image As school lets out for the summer San Francisco youth are eager for play time! The Playfields Stewardship Initiative wants to give local kids the opportunity to exercise and play outside. To encourage such healthy active play, the Initiative is hosting a free soccer day on June 13, 2010 at Garfield Square Park.

“The Garfield Square playfield is heavily used by soccer players of all ages, but sometimes young kids just learning the game can be intimidated by older, more skilled players. Together with local park users, the Playfields Stewardship Initiative wanted to give youth ages 14 and under a time and place to enjoy playing together in a pressure-free environment. I hope this free soccer day will get neighbors even more excited about using their park and holding ongoing volunteer workdays and events here,” said Initiative Coordinator Matt Silva.

Youth Help Keep Crocker Amazon Clean

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

SCORES YouthThe morning fog combined with overcast skies provided a chilly backdrop for what would be a very productive morning at Crocker Amazon Park. The wind had done its part over the last several days to strew about thousands of eucalyptus leaves on the playfields. Luckily for the playfield, over 50 eager youth volunteers from Bay Area SCORES were up to the task of “relocating” this waste to its proper purpose: the compost bin.

For the second consecutive month, and as a bookend to their game day season, the youth from SCORES rolled up their sleeves and helped clean up Crocker Amazon’s playfields. By now familiar with the work, the group’s efforts took almost no coordination as they routinely picked up gloves, their tools, and made their way to where the leaves were. Within minutes, it was clear their work was paying off. Little piles of leaves soon became larger piles, and shortly after another pair of hands followed to scoop the piles up into a bag.

Post CleanupBefore long, an entire section of playfield that had been covered in leaves was spotless. Coaches remarked on the benefits of a clean playfield, saying that acorns can sometimes be a hazard when youth slip on them. Doing this sort of regular cleanup helps make sure that these great playfields remain that way. SCORES looks forward to hosting more cleanup days, and would like more support from other playfield users. If you’d like to help out, please send an email to outreach@sfnpc.org.
