Executive Director, San Francisco Parks Alliance

San Francisco Parks Alliance is a newly forming non-profit organization that combines the strengths of two existing park organizations: Neighborhood Parks Council and San Francisco Parks Trust. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced non-profit leader to be our first Executive Director who can build on the stature of the two groups and create a mission-driven organization that will serve San Francisco parks and park users through the 21st century.


San Francisco Neighborhood Parks Council and San Francisco Parks Trust have agreed to join forces to create the San Francisco Parks Alliance, which will hold the vision for San Francisco’s parks, align community needs and civic engagement with accountable City management, and support park improvements through philanthropic investment.

The Mission Statement for the new organization is:

“The mission of San Francisco Parks Alliance is to inspire civic engagement and philanthropy to grow, sustain, and enhance San Francisco parks and recreation for all.”

San Francisco Parks Alliance has been formed to respond to the challenge of funding parks today, reflected in declining public funding for parks and recreation. Both organizations have strong constituencies and financial operations, but it was apparent that there has been some duplication of services and competition for funding. Together we will be a force to contend with as champions of our green spaces.


Our merger will be effective October 3rd and most of our Board of Directors will be selected by that date. The candidate pool will be screened to the most highly qualified and that group will be interviewed in September/October.

The Executive Director will be a champion and spokesperson for parks in San Francisco, a successful fundraiser who can secure outside support and resources for parks as well as those necessary to ensure that the SFPA organization is sustainable. This position offers the opportunity for

a leader to bring creative ideas, operational and governance expertise, and knowledge of and passion for parks to bear in successfully integrating and managing the new organization while building for the future.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director’s responsibilities include:

The Executive Director will be responsible for a staff of 15 or more, distributed in three departments: Policy and Advocacy, Resource Development, and Finance and Operations. A management team and staff is currently in place composed of members from each predecessor organization, so the ED will build cohesion, inspire staff, and chart the course for SFPA.

The Resource Development Committee and the Policy and Advocacy Committee are key governance structures that will be the responsibility of the ED and the Board to develop. The budget overall is expected to be $9-10 million annually, which includes the income and expenses of approximately 100 Park Partner (fiscally sponsored) groups, and the direct operating budget of SFPA will be around $2 million initially.

Key Responsibilities of the Executive Director will include:

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, designing and achieving the mission and goals of the organization, ensuring that it is sustainable, well-run, and demonstrates the highest level of integrity.
  • Inspiring and championing fundraising efforts.
  • Leading advocacy efforts, working with park groups, elected officials, key commissions and the Mayor’s Office.
  • Overseeing research to determine best practices to enhance the San Francisco parks system.
  • Working closely with staff to build teamwork, coordinate priorities and provide hands-on leadership.
  • Working with the Board and staff to develop the strategic plan and drive its implementation.
  • Working with the Board and staff to successfully integrate the constituent organizations and develop a strong infrastructure for the new organization, including IT, donor systems and procedures, process flows, communications, organizational structure, policies and procedures, organizational culture, branding, business model, financial management, and related activities.
  • Working with Board members to leverage their support for our mission; assist with board development, recruitment, and effective governance; and manage monthly board meetings.
  • Overseeing financial budgeting and management and fiscal sponsorship activities.
  • Building strong relationships with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the Mayor’s Office, Board of Supervisors and the Parks Commission, and other agencies that manage greenspaces.
  • Acting as spokesperson and champion for the organization before the community, government, prospective donors and the press.


The Executive Director we seek will have a distinguished career and track record of accomplishment in the management of non-profit organizations. He/she will be a well-organized, results-driven and inspirational leader with the following qualities:

  • Demonstrated passion for parks and recreation.
  • 8+ years of non-profit management experience, including staff management of at least 10 individuals and successful financial management of an annual budget exceeding $2m.
  • Experience managing relationships with civic leaders, community stakeholders, and volunteers, with knowledge and experience of San Francisco politics a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a non-profit board of directors.
  • Commitment to and experience with non-profit professional staff development.
  • A strong track record in fund development and, ideally, with experience in facilitating public/private partnerships, with connections to and knowledge of Bay Area philanthropy a plus.
  • Successful development and execution of a strategic plan, including aligning programs, business model, internal systems and structures, staff and board skills, and finances to support that strategy.
  • Experience working with the media and development of an organizational communications plan, including social media and internet communications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional public presence; skills and ease serving as the public face of the organization; ability to be credible with diverse audiences; unflappable and poised.
  • A sense of integrity and ethical standards that help guide decisions and set the tone of the organization.
  • Minimum Bachelors Degree, with an advanced degree in a related field a plus.

I am pleased to announce that on July 12, 2011 the members of the San Francisco Parks Trust (SFPT) voted in favor of forming a new, bigger and more effective park-serving organization for San Francisco in conjunction with the Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC). NPC turns 15 this year. It is absolutely essential to managing an effective, efficient and vibrant non-profit that we step back from the day-to-day every so often and take a broader look at our efforts. As a part of examining our work, our mission, and our role in serving parks and open space in San Francisco, we took a deep look at how we conduct business as a non-profit and at our partners. We spent time talking with the Board and staff of the San Francisco Parks Trust and noticed that over the years, our two organizations began to serve park users in similar ways through programs such as fiscal sponsorship. We also noted that NPC’s vigorous advocacy was leading to a greater philanthropic investment in our parks and SFPT’s philanthropic contributions were leading to more park advocacy. As organizations, we asked ourselves- is there a need to create a new model for serving San Francisco parks and park users? In this depressed economic environment should we do all we can to reduce duplication of efforts and provide a stronger and united voice for parks?

By January of 2011, the Boards and staff of NPC and SFPT concluded that there was merit to the idea of exploring a new organization. We spent more time working with each other to develop a draft vision for a new park organization. We spoke with the Recreation and Park Department and park organization leaders from around the state to float our ideas and seek input.

In February of 2011, I began talking with NPC’s Coalition Steering Committee about how much does viagra cost the notion of joining forces with SFPT not simply as a merger of two organizations, but to form a brand new park-serving organization. The Steering Committee expressed that NPC’s strong connections to every neighborhood in San Francisco and informed advocacy must remain a corner stone of any new effort. In April, NPC and SFPT held a joint stakeholder meeting at SPUR to get feedback on our vision and we worked to continue to refine our plans. The mission of the San Francisco Parks Alliance is to inspire and promote civic engagement and philanthropy to protect, sustain, and enrich San Francisco parks and green open spaces.

At NPC’s annual Meeting with the Mayor, we released hard copies of a joint “green paper,” composed by the Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC) and the San Francisco Parks Trust (SFPT). We are pleased to have the opportunity to share our early plans for a new city-wide organization for our parks and open space in San Francisco. Since 1996, the Neighborhood Parks Council (NPC) has worked collaboratively with our coalition of park groups, community advocates and partners. As someone reading this message, we know that you have an interest and passion for your parkland. It is through park users and supporters, like you, that we are capable of giving our parks and open spaces an effective voice at City Hall. It is with your participation that we can continue to strive for a superior, equitable and sustainable park and recreation system for San Francisco.

As we celebrate our 15th anniversary as an organization, NPC has begun to work towards a vision for a comprehensive park resource and advocacy organization with the San Francisco Parks Trust (SFPT). With the substantial decreases in public funding for our parks, both organizations share the desire to safeguard the future of San Francisco’s green space. To this end, NPC and SFPT have been exploring the opportunity to create a unified organization that can ensure that volunteerism, civic engagement, advocacy, and philanthropy are coordinated and leveraged to achieve the best outcomes for our parks.

NPC and SFPT recognize that San Francisco citizens want and need a world-class, independent nonprofit to hold the vision for parks, align community needs with accountable management by our government, and provide resources for parks through volunteerism and philanthropy.

Moving forward, we are exploring whether a unified organization can eliminate duplication of efforts, be more efficient, and bring more resources to our parks. As our discussions continue, input from our coalition will be essential and ongoing. NPC will update this webpage with any information or documents that call for coalition feedback.
